Nice - Apartment

The flat is in an ideal location for exploring Nice and the many other attractions of the magnificent Cote d'Azur. This 4th floor flat is only one minute from a small supermarket, five minutes from the tram stop in Avenue Jean Medicin, ten minutes from the main rail station and 15 minutes from the Promenade des Anglais and the numerous restaurants in the old town around the port. The flat itself was a good size for the two of us and could accommodate four, courtesy of the bed-sofa in the living area. A full size fridge-freezer, hob and oven with plenty of cooking utensils made catering easy. The dishwasher and washing machine also worked well and the shower (with "monsoon" shower head) was excellent. [...] We were pleasantly surprised at how easy and cheap it was to explore the surrounding towns. Leaving the flat to go to Monaco involved catching a tram for a few stops to Place Garibaldi, then walking for five minutes to catch the #100 bus to Monaco. All this for only €1.50 thanks to the tram ticket being eligible for any subsequent bus journeys which start within 74 minutes of buying the ticket. A total bargain! Tip - try to get a seat on the right-hand side of the bus to enjoy the panoramic views of the coastline as you head through beautiful Villefranche and classy Beaulieu. We were so impressed by both these resorts that we later spent full days in each of them. The prom at Villefranche is worth seeing but we particularly enjoyed wandering around the old streets set back from the prom. Both resorts have plenty of (hyper-expensive) boats to ogle over and nice sun-soaked beach to work on your tan. We particularly recommend Plage Petite Afrique in Beaulieu for safe swimming in a small bay. The coarse, clean white sand and palm trees on the beach looked like a scene from a glamorous AfricanCaribbean jet-set holiday brochure. Tip - take the train back to Nice from Villefranche, BeaulieuMonaco rather than the #100 bus as it is generally crowded so there is a high risk you will not get on. The terminus is in Menton, much further east than Monaco, so even catching the #100 in Monaco will not guarantee you a seat. Train fares are very reasonable (around €3.50) and trains run frequently - around every 20 minutesso. It was also easy to visit glamorous Cannes and Juan les Pins by train - don't be tempted to take the bus to these towns as there are many stops on the way and traffic con be very congested. The best surprise for us was to visit the mountain village of Eze. We had each bought a 10-journey bus/tram ticket for €10 which still allowed multiple uses when changing transport within 74 minutes of its first use (NB not eligible for the #100 bus to Monaco). This enabled us to catch a tram and walk to the Max Barel bus stop (near the old port) and pick up a #82 bus to visit Eze. This is a popular trip so the bus was crowded, but the 20-minute journey was the most spectacular of the holiday as the bus climbed up the mountain road to around 2,700 feet. At times it looked like a sheer drop from the road to the sea below but it wasn't long before we arrived in Eze. We then spent around 5 hours wandering around the narrow streets of this ancient and well-preserved village, enjoying drinks and light snacks and a number of tiny restaurants and cafes. We highly recommend this trip. Incredible to think the fare was only €1. To enjoy the views once more, we decided to walk back to Nice - this took around two hours (including umpteen stops for photos). Not as daunting as it might sound - it's a steady downhill walk all the way. A fantastic holiday, made all the better by the inexpensive and regular public transport and the very convenient location and facilities of the flat.
